Review: My One and Only by Kristan Higgins

Divorce attorney Harper James can't catch a break. Bad enough that she runs into her ex-hubby, Nick, at her sister's destination wedding, but now, by a cruel twist of fate, she's being forced to make a cross-country road trip with him. And her almost-fiance back at home is not likely to be sympathetic. Harper can't help that Nick has come blazing back into her life in all of his frustratingly appealing, gorgeous architect glory. But in Nick's eyes, Harper's always been the one. If they can only get it right this time, forever might be waiting; just around the bend.

Harper and Nick got married at a very young age and things didn’t work out. As it happens with so many marriages they didn’t communicate with each other and things fell apart. Actually when they did talk they chose to ignore the info because it wasn’t what they wanted to hear and the two just couldn’t get past the hurdles and ended up getting a divorce.

That was 12 years ago. Harper is now a well-respected divorce attorney living on Martha’s Vineyard. She has friends and her family but despite that she’s missing something in her life. Sure, she has her boyfriend Dennis but is he really the one she wants to be with for the rest of her life? For a while Harper is sure that he is, but then she meets Nick again and her doubts pop to the surface.

Nick and Harper end up leaving Harper’s sister’s wedding together and taking a road trip. Nick has offered to get Harper to a certain destination but he’s not in any hurry to get to anywhere. He takes his time and the pair get to talk some, reconnect on a certain level and in the end talk about what really went wrong all those many years ago.

I’ve really liked all of the Kristan Higgins books that I’ve read so far so when I started off this book and by page 19 wanted to smack Harper around I wasn’t sure what to think. But since I’ve had such good experiences with KH books in the past I kept reading and I’m glad I did. I ended up having a like/hate relationship with Harper. She would annoy the crap outta me or do something ridiculous but then she’d redeem herself for a while and I’d like her. I believe it was because she had such issues because of her mother leaving when she was 13 but it took her SO LONG to figure this out. She was a really smart woman so why the heck it took her so long to grasp the meaning behind all of her decisions is beyond me.

Nick – he was interesting. He loved Harper so much and only really wanted to be with her – then and now. But the man was only willing to wait around so long before he got sick of being crushed. Now granted we only really saw Nick from Harper’s view what I saw – I liked.

The book is a much more emotional book than I’ve read before from this author but it was well done, imho. The matters between Harper and Nick were dealt with thoroughly. I don’t always want it wrapped up in a pretty little bow but I want there to be a clear resolution and there was. The book is not a fast-paced read so while the issues weren’t dealt with quickly in the end, I was quite satisfied.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Often authors make the mistake of resolving situations in their novels so quickly that they are hardly believable. Deep emotional encounters are often so complicated that a quick resolution is laughable. Sounds like a really good read.

*gasp* A Kristan Higgins book without a canine on the cover?!

Dr. J. - As I said I had a like/hate relationship with the heroine so I wasn't sure how I would feel at the end of the book but you're right, it ended up being a really good read.

Chris - Yep, can't have a KH book without a dog on the cover. :)

Leslie - I like road trip stories too. Those and cabin romances do it for me. :)

I'm a bit torn about this one. I'm looking forward to it, but I just hope, hope, hope that I'm going to enjoy it... and that, I'm not sure ^_^;
