I thought that this was a thing that just happened in Tracyland, but apparently not! I googled "holes in my shirts" just for shits and giggles and low and behold there are boatloads of people out there trying to come up with a reason why this is happening! And hey, proof that I'm not crazy! Ok, not crazy about that.
It apparently is common for women's shirts (mostly) and happens mostly with thinner t-shirt or stretch-type materials.
There are many thoughts as to the cause of these holes - here are a few:
- Seatbelt rubbing on shirts
- Shirts rubbing on belts (the kind that hold up your pants)
- Shirts rubbing on brass buttons or edges of jeans - maybe even zipper pulls
- Rubbing against granite counter tops
**Rubbing on belt - again, a possibility...but my hubby's been wearing a belt longer than I have and he has no issues. I think his shirts are made from thicker he-man materials so that may be it.
**Edge of jeans? Well this one may be a problem but I get this even when I wear my work shirts with skirts or pants with regular buttons and still get holes. So...I don't think so. Maybe?
**Granite counter tops. Well, we have them and I do cook and do dishes in my kitchen - as some do - but I just don't think that smooth surface would create this problem.
Frankly I have no idea what the cause of it is - I just want it to stop. lol I can't afford to constantly be buying shirts.
So - does this happen to you?
Here are a couple of examples - these are NOT MY SHIRTS. I just took these off the web because they were similar to my issues.

I don't know if this is your problem but I get this issue ALL the time. I finally realized that it comes from bleach. I get bleach all over my clothes from work and sometimes while cleaning the house and it results in these tiny holes. Sometimes discoloration (obvious bleach spots) but for most of my cheaper clothes (t-shirts, tanks) it comes as tiny holes.
Is the washing machine doing it? If you take a new shirt and only hand wash it, do you still have the same problem?
I mostly wear mens t-shirts and such, which tend to be more heavy duty.
You are not alone! LOL. Many of my shirts do this (mind, none of my clothes are expensive, but not all are cheap-cheap either). Some of it's from when I catch the bottom of my shirts on some small nails that we've got along the counters in our kitchen (which means I've just been to lazy to pull them out and fix). Part of the holes, I think, are from me constantly pulling my shirts down. Who knows? Maybe we have little pixies or some such playing tricks on us....
Enjoy!

It happened with one of my pregnancy shirts. I discovered the holes after two months. It was thin and stretchy so maybe that does have something to do with it. That and washing the clothes. I think I shall have a talk with my sisters to see if it has happened to them too.
Kassa - Well I don't use bleach around the house except in the showers. Strangely enough the shirts I clean in are fine. lol
Chris - Yeah, men's shirts are made of sturdier material apparently.
I HAVE hand washed and then hung dry but it's still happened - that's how I ruled out the washer and dryer. :)
TBQ - Yes! Aliens or Pixie's - great theory. lol
I think I'm going to have to try to eliminate issues one by one and see what I can find. I'll cover the seat belt, wear an apron in the kitchen (what a pain!)...but I'm not sure what I can do about the belts on my pants. I kind of need those to keep my pants up. lol
Alyn - It's just so weird. I thought I was the only one but when I looked online I was shocked at the amount of people who had the same issue. This happens to me whether the shirt is loose and hanging or more form fitting. I think I'll start with covering my seat belt. :)
Tracy: Is Echo close to any of these clothes looking innocent?
I thought I was the only one!
Me it's my jeans. The inside thighs get really thin-threaded and eventually holes :( Ugh.
As for shirts, you know, I think the quality of fabric definitively has a lot of things to do with it. I once bought a shirt and there was already holes in it, I think from the hanger.
SidneyKay - Oh it would be so easy to blame her but no. She's after the furniture, not my clothes. :)
LB - I felt the same way! lol
Nath - Jeans should NOT be doing that. That's horrible for you.
Yeah, it just doesn't matter who the manufacturer is or where I buy it. It could be Macy's, Gap, Target or Banana Republic they ALL do it. So sad.
